Job Description

As a Placemaker, you will play a vital role in supporting participatory and community-forward projects, enhancing public spaces and fostering community engagement. You will assist in the design, planning, and implementation of projects that create vibrant environments with a focus on sustainability. This position is ideal for someone passionate about urban design, community development, and creating spaces that enhance quality of life.

Key Responsibility

1. Lead Placemaking Strategy & Delivery

  • Champion and lead the development of place-based strategies that support community wellbeing, sustainability, and long-term space activation.
  • Take full ownership of project lifecycles — from concept and planning through to implementation and evaluation.
  • Oversee the spatial design intent and application of placemaking principles across all initiatives, ensuring accessibility, inclusivity, and engagement.

2. Strategic Stakeholder & Partnership Management

  • Build and manage relationships with internal teams, external partners, consultants, and community stakeholders.
  • Represent the organisation in engagements with local authorities, residents, and commercial tenants.
  • Cultivate partnerships that support long-term activation goals and maintain goodwill with key collaborators.

3. Programme & Tenancy Activation

  • Develop strategic programming that activates public and semi-public spaces through events, installations, workshops, or curated tenant experiences.
  • Ensure alignment between programming and broader objectives such as community development, footfall generation, or ESG impact.
  • Work closely with tenants, programme partners, and content curators to co-create meaningful experiences.

4. Business Development & Impact Strategy

  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals, pitch decks, and presentations for funders, clients, and potential sponsors.
  • Integrate impact measurement tools (e.g., ESG, SDG alignment, SROI) into placemaking frameworks.
  • Identify and support new revenue and engagement models that ensure the sustainability of activation strategies.

5. Internal Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Act as a bridge between design, operations, communications, and senior leadership to ensure cohesion and clarity across placemaking initiatives.
  • Build internal capacity by developing team workflows, managing resources, and mentoring junior staff.
  • Report to management on key performance indicators, timelines, and budgets.
You’re a Good Fit If You Have
  • 5–8 years of experience in placemaking, urban design, planning, community development, or a related field.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to work alongside multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with sustainability frameworks (e.g. SDGs, ESG, Bursa disclosures).
  • Excellent communication skills – both visual and verbal.
  • Passion for place, people, and purpose.
Bonus Points If You
  • Have experience curating programs or events that activate public space
  • Are adept at turning feedback and community insight into practical design or strategy
  • Bring experience working with grassroots initiatives or cross-sector collaborations
  • Experience in submitting, managing and/or piloting grants
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Strong communication skills in English and Bahasa Melayu.
  • Professional proficiency in English writing.
  • Basic proficiency in Digital and Microsoft or Google Workspace tools (Slides, Doc, Sheet, Meet).
  • Proficiency in spatial design tools such as AutoCAD, SketchUp will be highly favoured.
  • Community facilitation skills
  • Creative ability to problem-solve.
  • Skill in prioritising and triaging obligations.
  • Excellent time management and organisation.
  • Self-start and can-do attitude; ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Pleasant personality with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must have their own transport, ability to drive and travel and utilise their own laptop.
Experience
  • Background in architecture, UI/UX design, interior design, construction, urban planning, social studies will be sought after.
